History of Nishmah

Picture
Nishmah was founded in March 2005 under the vision and leadership of Karen Sher and Ronit Sherwin. Karen and Ronit listened to the voices of girls and women in the St. Louis Jewish community. They listened to the needs, concerns and ideas that girls and women had to offer in order to further build and enhance the strength of the Jewish community. Working with a founding Board of Directors composed of 16 individuals, Nishmah created a mission and a vision for girls and women in the St. Louis Jewish community. While Nishmah seeks wisdom and guidance from other Jewish  women's organizations throughout the nation, Nishmah is not an organization that derives from a previous mold. Nishmah is organic in that it originates from the girls and women of St. Louis and is devoted solely to the girls and women of St. Louis. Nishmah is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Mission

Nishmah inspires, engages and supports girls and women through educational, spiritual and social programming.  Through a collaborative model, Nishmah strengthens the St. Louis Jewish community.

Vision

As we celebrate Nishmah's 5th anniversary, we are launching a new logo to mark our growth and maturity as an organization.  This new logo reflects our mission, communicated in five words: EDUCATE. INSPIRE. ENGAGE.  JEWISH WOMEN (which also includes girls).

Our experience and growing pains have afforded us a clear focus as to who we are and what we do best.  We are a feminist organization, illuminated by the flower and softness of our signature.  We are fresh and innovative, reflected in the brightness of our colors.  And we are proudly Jewish, highlighted by the Jewish star at our core.

Additionally, we are transparent in our learning and our processing, and we require the support of community, just as a flower grows in its individual manner and is nurtured by water.

You, our community, are our water.  Participate in our programs and keep us growing.
